ACC & ACC-US honor the women who are advancing conservation efforts and strengthening Kenya’s sustainability—everyday. Increasing economic opportunities, particularly for women, is imperative to building sustainable conservation practices and more equitable societies.

ACC economically-empowers Maasai women living in Kenya’s four rich biodiverse landscapes areas: Amboseli, Laikipia and Maasai Mara. ACC’s programs help these communities develop conservation-related enterprises that improve livelihoods. Businesses such as beading, beekeeping and milk cooperatives allow women to support themselves, gain new skills and connections, contribute to sustainable development and become respected leaders. ACC & ACC-US celebrate these women who have overcome cultural barriers and become beacons of hope for their pastoral communities.

Women of Amboseli

Women of Noonkotiak Community Resource Centre – Amboseli

The Noonkotiak Community Resource Centre in Amboseli is an information and research hub for the community, scientists, students and other visitors. It also hosts a Maasai cultural boma that offers accommodation and a cultural experience for tourists who are interested in seeing how the Maasai coexist with wildlife. The boma is owned and managed by Maasai women.

Women of Laikipia

Women of Twala-Tenebo Cultural Manyatta – Laikipia

ACC and Uaso Ngiro Baboon Project have supported the Twala-Tenebo Cultural Manyatta for the last 18 years. The community project provides income for six women groups with a membership of 203 women. The facility provides a unique and authentic experience to visitors through guided baboon walks, eco-tours, Maasai cultural experiences and affordable accommodation in eco-manyattas. The women engage in other enterprises such as beadwork, aloe farming and beekeeping.

Women of Maasai Mara

Mara Women Groups — Maasai Mara National Reserve

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is a leading tourist destination and revered as the 8th wonder of the world. It hosts more than 95 species of mammals, reptiles and birds. The annual wildebeest migration of more than 1.5 million animals is a sight to behold. ACC has supported six women groups from Mara and trained them on beadwork making. The women sell their beadwork products such as dog collars at the Maasai Mara National Reserve and international pet stores.
